A new roof -- Uusi katto

Our roof project is finally progressing again now that spring and warmer weather has arrived.
Here's a shot of what the roof looked like two years ago when we bought the house.

Kattoprojektimme edistyy taas viimein, kun kevät ja lämpimät ilmat ovat saapuneet.

Tältä katto näytti kaksi vuotta sitten, kun ostimme talon.

 It was leaking in several places, and apparently had been like that for the past 20 years... There were tile bits missing, moss all over, leaking water spot marks inside the house, etc. When it was raining, I actually had to place half a dozen buckets strategically in a few rooms, like Donald Duck in some old cartoon! We added some emergency patches to stop the worst leaks before we finally got some roofer friends in.

Se vuosi monesta kohdasta ja ilmeisesti oli tehnyt niin viimeiset 20 vuotta... Katosta puuttui eterniittilevyn palasia, sammalta oli joka puolella, talon sisällä oli vesivuotojen merkkejä jne. 

Aina, kun satoi, jouduin strategisesti sijoittelemaan puolen tusinaa ämpäriä muutamaan huoneeseen, kuin Aku Ankka ikään jossain vanhassa sarjakuvassa! Teimme pari ensiapupaikkausta pahimpien vuotojen estämiseksi ennen kuin viimein saimme katontekijäkaverit töihin.

During the winter we had half of the house covered with this novel wood board that functions as the base layer sitting under the two-ply bitumen roofing. The basic structure is a ventilated roof structure, and it had kept fairly well. The decking structure and timber frames were in reasonable condition and only needed some bracing. Oh, and the other half of the house was covered merely by the old shingle remains and tarpaulin during the winter - you can imagine the heat loss was remarkable at -28 C degrees of cold...

Talvella puoli taloa oli katettu tällä uudenlaisella puulevyllä, joka toimii pohjakerroksena kaksikerroksisen bitumikatteen alla. Perusrakenne on tuulettuva yläpohjarakenne ja se oli säilynyt melko hyvn. Alusta- ja puurakenteet olivat kohtuullisessa kunnossa ja tarvitsivat vain vähän tukemista.

Niin, ja talon toisen puolen katteenna toimivat talven yli vain vanhat päreiden jäänteet ja pressu - voitte kuvitella, että lämpöhäviö oli melkoinen -28 asteen pakkasilla...

And here we are this week - we actually have some of the bitumen roofing in place. Can't wait for the project to get finished and see the brand new roof complete!

Näin pitkällä olemme tällä viikolla - meillä on todellakin jo hieman bitumikattoa paikoillaan. Tuskin maltan odottaa projektin saamista päätökseen ja upouuden katon näkemistä valmiina!
